The Council for Economic Education (CEE) recognizes excellence in economic education by honoring three (3) outstanding high school educators from the New York Metropolitan area with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Teaching Champion Award. You need not be a teacher of economics to apply and win. This award honors and recognizes a high school level teacher who effectively delivers economic education in and out of their classrooms and achieves results. We seek applicants who instill in students an understanding of economics and the tools to make informed and responsible decisions that they will carry with them as they grow into successful and productive adults.
Applications are due Sunday, February 25th, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.
AWARDEES WILL RECEIVE
• A cash award of $5,000.
• A cash award of $2,500 for their school to support economic education.
• Admission to the CEE's Virtual 63rd Annual Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference in fall 2024.
• Recognition at our DIamong Gala on the evening of Tuesday, April 30th, 2024.
ELIGIBILITY
• Applicants must teach in one of five New York City boroughs (Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, or Staten Island).
• This award is open to high school teachers of all subjects, not just teachers of economics. Applicants must demonstrate how they integrate economics into their teaching.
• Teachers will not have to participate in previous CEE training to be eligible.
• All certified teachers in grades 9-12 from public, private, or parochial schools may enter, and you must have taught full-time in the classroom during the 2022-2023 school year. Substitute and part-time teachers are not eligible.
• Applicants must plan to teach full-time during the 2024-2025 school year.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The review committee will look for applicants who:
• Exhibit innovative approaches to economic and financial education using multiple teaching approaches.
• Inspire their students to make an economic way of thinking a mainstay in their personal and academic lives.
• Demonstrate student achievement (examples could include performance assessments, pre-and post-test results, student portfolios, videos, or any other assessment instrument or technique).
• Challenge and encourage students to use economics as a mechanism for acquiring the skills necessary to succeed in their education and with their future careers.
• Validate projects, lessons, and opportunities designed to push kids to go beyond the textbook, creating student participation with assessments of their learning.
• Reflect a commitment to economic education that extends beyond the classroom. What do you do to promote economics outside your classroom? (e.g. clubs, contests, debates, challenges).
• Encourage a collaborative environment where students are encouraged to take charge of their learning, create an atmosphere of inquiry, use different lenses to understand a problem, and inspire an economic curiosity to see how their knowledge ties to the real world.
• Honorees must agree to support CEE's efforts on behalf of training teachers and representing CEE at selected events. Honorees will agree to lead one professional development workshop within six months of receiving the Sloan award before receiving the additional funding for their school.
